Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small kid. DuVernay worked as night nurses to afford her mother the time she needed during the day for the love of art, literature, and theatre. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages by means of the medium of art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she spent every summer in the company of her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to make the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news as a young student. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house of an individual Jury member. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired after graduating from college as a junior publicist at a small studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
